Safe Kids

Do you believe that children are the future?

Whether or not you have kids, being cool means we work to care about all those around us. This week is National Safe Kids Week. This campaign makes it to millions of households each year with the help of lots of people who care. With educational outreach and public relations, informative ad campaigns and thousands of people on foot speaking out about child safety, the word is getting out, and kids are safer for it. Children are the future, so let's help protect this valuable resource. You can also take a minute to brush up on some safety tips.

I'm a very grateful and proud mother of 3. As they get older, stranger safety is more of an issue. We have a "secret word," and my oldest reminded me Friday that we ought to change it, so we did. If an adult, other than certain family members, unexpectedly offers my children a ride, the kids are supposed to ask, "What's the secret word?" No matter how plausible the adult's story, the kids are not to go with that person unless they hear that secret word. My daughters know to holler for their teacher or principal in that situation so they can contact me. We've never had to use it, but it's a cool safety idea for school-age kids.

Our sons are grown men now but we have a 12month old god-daughter that my husband is more protective of then ever with the boys when we are out in public. I can be very funny at times.
